Early Years Practitioner



Would you like to work at Gawber Pre-school? Due to a shuffle around of staff hours we are looking for an experienced Early Years Practitioner to join our team to work Monday to Thursday mornings 8.30am -12.30pm 16 hours per week. The successful applicant will need to hold a relevant level 3 qualification in early years or equivalent and have at least 2 years’ experience in an Early Years setting.


The post will be subject to an enhanced DBS check and 2 written references will be required.

Job Description



Purpose of Post:


To work as an effective member of the team. To be responsible for the overall development of children in their care being responsive to children’s individual needs.


Key Areas:


  • Develop positive relationships with children and their parents/carers
  • Develop positive relationships with other staff and partner agencies.
  • To take responsibility for planning, tracking and evaluating the learning and development of key children and setting individual targets.
  • To be responsible for the supervision of children at play (indoor and outdoor) and at mealtimes.


Duties and Responsibilities:


  • To contribute to the planning and delivery of the Early Years Foundation Stage.
  • To contribute to creating a comfortable, safe, stimulating and nurturing environment which takes into consideration each family’s ethnic and cultural background and each child’s individual needs.
  • To operate a key person system, creating and maintain partnerships with parents/carers and partner agencies encouraging their involvement and engagement in our work.
  • Plan and organise appropriate play and educational activities following children’s interest, promoting individualized learning opportunities.
  • Observe and assess children regularly maintaining detailed accurate and up to date written records of each child’s progress.
  • Provide personal care to children whilst at the same time providing opportunities for children to develop their independence.
  • To report any safeguarding incident or concerns immediately in line with Barnsley Safeguarding Board policies and procedures ensuring your line manager is informed promptly
  • Undertake a shared responsibility for health, safety, hygiene and cleanliness adhering to all relevant policies, procedures and legislative requirements including OFSTED ratios, fire, food hygiene, emergency and security procedures.
  • To contribute to setting up and tidying up the provision before and after each session leaving the setting clean and tidy.
  • To attend regular staff meetings and contribute effectively to the development of Gawber Pre-school.
  • To adopt a professional and confident approach to communicating with parents and carers, the staff team and partner agencies.
  • Any other duties commensurate with the role and falling within the scope of the post as requested by management.




  • To be a reliable member of the team working cooperatively and flexibly to meet the needs of the setting. This could involve differing work hours according to the settings needs to cover sickness or holiday cover.
  • To adhere to Gawber Pre-School policies and procedures particularly in relation to Health and Safety, Equal Opportunities, Confidentiality, Data protection and Safeguarding.
  • To work effectively at all times within the Gawber Pre-School Team.
  • Adopt a positive approach to continuing professional development and supervision.
  • Adhere to the Gawber Pre-School dress code and code of conduct.
  • Please note, CCTV is in constant operation at Gawber Pre-school.


Any other duties commensurate with the role and falling within the scope of the post as requested by management.
